F1i's Driver Ratings for the 2024 Japanese GP

Valtteri Bottas (P14): 6.5/10
Sauber have suffered from pit lane problems all season, so much so that even a further sluggish four second stop for Valtteri Bottas during Sunday's race didn't merit much comment. It's a shame because it had been a better weekend for the Finn up till then, which saw him consistently faster than his Sauber team mate Zhou Guanyu throughout the weekend. He was within a second of the Red Bulls in final practice and made the first cut in qualifying to put himself up into 12th place on the grid for the race. Unfortunately the slow stop left him stuck among the likes of Haas, Alpine and Logan Sargeant in the sole surviving Williams. Bottas was able to work his way through some of the congestion but his final laps were frustrated by Kevin Magnussen, Nico Hulkenberg and their scrap with Lance Stroll meaning he was unable to improve on 14th by the time the chequered flag heaved into view.

Kevin Magnussen (P13): 6/10
Kevin Magnussen struggled in practice - he was slowest of anyone in FP3 - and he still seemed to have little pace in qualifying where he comprehensively missed the first cut while his team mate sailed through to Q2. Nico Hulkenberg was even in contention for the final round until the last second. By contrast, Magnussen found himself lining up on the grid in P18 on Sunday, and the team assigned him a one-stop strategy that required him to run the first 22 laps on mediums before switching to hard tyres for the rest of the afternoon. He actually did pretty well in the circumstances with some nice robust moves on those around him, and then thwarting Valtteri Bottas in the closing laps. Even so, having to allow Hulkenberg sail past on a two-stopper will have taken the shine off things for the Dane this week.
