F1i's Driver Ratings for the 2024 Chinese GP

Oscar Piastri (P8, 6 pts): 7/10
Despite being second quickest in the opening practice session, Oscar Piastri was somewhat eclipsed by his team mate this weekend. Lando Norris went on to take pole for the Sprint race while Piastri could only manage eighth on the grid. Norris' mistake at the start of the Sprint meant the papaya pair crossed the finish line in formation. In qualifying Norris once again had the edge, but this time Piastri was right behind him on the grid. While Norris was able to pass Fernando Alonso, Piastri didn't seem to have the pace to do likewise, nor was he able to stay ahead of the Ferraris. He then suffered damage in a collision at the first restart that left him struggling just to make it to the finish, for which he deserves bonus credit in achieving.

Fernando Alonso (Fastest lap, P7, 7 pts): 8/10
Fernando Alonso certainly had an eye-catching race on Sunday, with Aston Martin trying all sorts of different things when it came to tyre strategies. It left him on a fresh set of mediums for the closing laps that allowed him to carve his way through the field and claim the bonus point for fastest lap in the process. But having done brilliantly to qualify in third in the first place, an overall drop of four places by the finish was not as impressive as all those stylish overtakes might have led us to believe. Added to the fact that he was the only retirement from the Sprint race the day before and a rating of eight out of ten is about the best we can justify. Full marks to the two-time world champion for entertainment value in those closing laps, though.
