McLAREN GETS A NOSE JOB
Long awaited, the evolution introduced by McLaren in Barcelona focused on several aspects of MCL33.
The most dramatic change occurred at the nose section. The classic design, used since 2016, has given way to a triple ducted nose section. The central opening takes up the concept developed by Red Bull last year. It is completed on its sides by two nostrils, similar to those seen on the Sauber C37.
In the extension of the nose, the front bodypanel has been considerably slimmed and is flanked by a pair of blades that extend to the front suspension triangles.
TWO LATERAL EVACUATION SLOTS
Inside the nose section, the central duct is subdivided to join the two side channels, which open out under the sides of the cape-shaped wing, as inspired by Mercedes (see the white arrows).
While a central evacuation was expected, only two rectangular openings are visible under the “cape”, while the other openings contain the speed and ride height sensors (indicated by yellow arrows).
The "cape", which replaces the old centre vane under the nose, controls the airflow downward and generates vortices aligned with the turning vanes, which have been reshaped accordingly (see next page).
