Mika Hakkinen - European GP 1997

Valtteri Bottas lamented yesterday about how long it took him - 81 races - to win his first race, but Mika Hakkinen was on his 96th Grand Prix start when clinched his first win.

In his fourth full season with McLaren, Hakkinen capped off the year with victory in the European Grand Prix at Jerez, the very last round of the 1997 world championship.

Most will remember the race however for the title showdown which occurred between Jacques Villeneuve and Michael Schumacher, with the former coming out ahead after surviving the latter's ill-fated attempt to run the Canadian off the track.
