In 1969, with few options available, Surtees committed to BRM, a team now just a mere shadow of its former glorious self. Surtees best result in a frustrating season dominated by under-performance and unreliability was a fifth place finish in Spain.
John Surtees founded his eponymous team in 1970, as the twilight of his career as a driver descended upon him. He ran alone that year, with no decent results to speak of but added a second car in 1971, and even a third on occasion. Surtees retired in 1972 but continued to oversee the running of his perpetually underfunded outfit - or rather its survival - until it closed its doors at the end of 1978
