A lacklustre showing from the Swede, who started 19th on the grid, while his team mate Wehrlein slotted his Sauber on row seven. Following a poor start, he was running last when the safety car was called into service. The team decided not to bring him in – the only car not to make a stop- which saw him briefly occupy eighth place. After the safety car period, those behind on fresh rubber blew past. Using a one-stop strategy, he was set to be the last of the finishers when his gearbox failed.
