F1i's Driver Ratings for the 2022 Hungarian GP

Sebastian Vettel (P10, 1 pt): 6.5/10
Sebastian Vettel was very much the man of the moment on Friday after announcing his retirement from Formula 1 at the end of the current season. He had a solid time in practice - P11 and P7, and quicker than his team mate Lance Stroll on both occasions - but then rather blotted his copybook in the wet final practice on Saturday when he spun into the barriers at turn 10 giving the Aston Martin pit crew a lot of work to do before the start of qualifying. It was enough to leave him just far enough off the pace to miss the cut at the end of Q1 and starting Sunday's race from P18. Like Stroll he started on the soft tyres and put in a solid first stint before making an early visit to pit lane to switch to a used set of mediums. He and Stroll were still in sync when it came to their second stops, but this time Vettel had the option of taking another set of mediums which gave him more durability in the final laps. With Stroll's pace fast fading, the Canadian agreed to move over to give Vettel a run at chasing down Esteban Ocon ahead. Valtteri Bottas' retirement interrupted those plans and leapt Vettel having to settle for a single point in tenth. "The team switched cars because I had a better opportunity to catch Esteban, but obviously the Virtual Safety Car hurt us and we ran out of time. I was very close on the final lap, but I needed just one more corner to make a move."

Esteban Ocon (P9, 2 pts): 7.5/10
At the moment, the main focus for Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso is their battle with McLaren over four place in the constructors championship. Their combined efforts in Hungary mean they will go into the summer break with a three point margin over their papaya rivals. Although Ocon started with the smallest of edges in FP1, he dropped behind the Spaniard in the subsequent sessions only to bounce back where it counted, pipping Alonso in qualifying after both cars successfully made it through to the final top ten pole shoot-out round. Between them they managed to lock out the third row of the grid, with Lando Norris just ahead and Daniel Ricciardo a few places behind. Both Alpines inevitably lost out to Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez during the opening laps, but they got ahead of Norris when the McLaren made an early stop only to then fall behind Ricciardo when they subsequently made their own stops. They switched to the hard compound in a bid to run the rest of the race without making any further stops. Although they made it work, Ocon struggled more than Alonso and the team asked him to make way for the two-time world champion on lap 40. Once all the other pit stops shook it it was a relatively straightforward and untroubled run to the flag in ninth for Ocon, and another double points finish for Alpine.
