Fernando Alonso (Power Unit, Lap 21): 7.5/10
Fernando Alonso started the weekend in tenth place in FP1 and got steadily better from there: it seemed as the conditions got trickier, Alonso was getting happier to show off his skills. He did particularly well in qualifying to put himself into fifth place in the Alpine but lost out at the start of the race when he was ambushed by Lando Norris into the first corner - normally you'd put good money on the opposite happening. He was easily able to contain Pierre Gasly over the opening ten laps up to the first safety car, and then came under pressure from Max Verstappen. Despite the Red Bull being the faster car, Alonso showed his class by thwarting Verstappen's attempts to get by - all the way to lap 21, when suddenly the engine failed on the A522. His record-breaking 350th Formula 1 outing was over in an instant. Alonso deserved better and looked to have every chance to score points in Singapore, but his premature exit along with that of Esteban Ocon has handed the advantage in the constructors championship to rivals McLaren.
Alexander Albon (Damage, Lap 26): 5/10
All eyes were on Alexander Albon to see how well the Williams driver had recovered from his emergency surgery for appendicitis at Monza. Physically there seemed to be no after-effects from that, even in the physically demanding high-humidity of Singapore. But maybe he wasn't fully recovered, because this was not a great weekend for Albon - although it's equally possible to blame the FW44 which clearly wasn't happy with the circuit or the conditions. Either way, Albon was consistently trapped in the bottom five in all three practice sessions, and there was no surprise 'get out of jail' leap in qualifying where he not only missed the cut but joined team mate Nicholas Latifi on the back row. He started the race with a spin at turn 7 which proved to be a practice run for the incident that finally put him out of the race on lap 26, having made no impact on proceedings except the one in the barrier.
