Under the skin of the Haas VF-16

F1-Haas-under the skin-2

THAT’S AN INDIVIDUAL WRAP!

In order to connect to the collector, the exhaust pipes go through the carbon gearbox casing, which Haas bought from Ferrari. The latter component is quite narrow and sports a flat outline in the junction area with the engine. By comparison, the 2015-spec Ferrari gearbox casing was curved in that same zone. Positioning the MGU-K on the side of the power unit – which was already the case on other engines – has freed up valuable space for the Maranello engineers.

As one can see on the close-up detail, each exhaust tailpipe is individually wrapped up in a metallic insulating material. The installation thus differs from the Mercedes, Renault, and Honda power units where the tailpipes are all enveloped in a single insulating cover.
