Mercedes: keeping a high profile
The W06’s front camera pods have been modified in order to comply with article 20.3.4 of the 2015 F1 technical regulations. Mercedes has installed its camera mountings high above the front-end of the car by using long, vertical props on each side of the nosecone. While staying clear of the prohibited 150mm area, the cameras are still undoubtedly helping the car’s aerodynamics.
Toro Rosso, which was also asked by the FIA to modify its pods, has gone for a no-support solution with cameras mounted straight on the nosecone. We’ll see if the Faenza-based team takes inspiration from Mercedes’ clever design by Melbourne.
