TRIMMING THE FLAPS

Williams decided to re-use its Monza 2015-spec rear wing installation last weekend. As a reminder, most teams had designed a new main board/flap arrangement when the Grove-based outfit had simply shortened its rear wing’s upper flap by 3 to 4cm.

Thus, the flap sits lower than the endplates (see dotted lines and red arrows). Again, this radical, yet economical solution reduces drag without having to change the endplates.

F1 minnows Manor ran the same concept, albeit only on Esteban Ocon’s car, which was also fitted with an eye-catching front wing that will be detailed over on page 6.
