Tech F1i: Mercedes and Ferrari press on, unrelenting

MERCEDES PLAYS THE DRUMS

It had escaped us earlier, but in Singapore, Mercedes had introduced new rear brake drums, as Giorgio Piola noticed. The rounded circumference that ran all around the circumference of the old model was opened up at about two-thirds (see the yellow arrows). Only the lower section remains, indicated above by white arrows. This recess creates a concave volume that alters the way in which the heat released by the brake disks is dispersed.

The Silver Arrows traditionally tend to overheat their rear tyres. These remodeled drums, combined with the new wheels appeared in Belgium, and aim to better control the temperature of the rear tyres of the W09.
