Any new team interested in joining the ranks of Formula 1 in 2016 or 2017 has until July 23 to lodge an application with the FIA.
The sport's governing body had previously set an original closing date of June 30 for potential entrants to express their interest when it issued a press release on the subject back in May.
"Having due regard for the sustainability and future success of the Formula 1 World Championship, the FIA has opened a new selection process to identify a candidate team to participate in the championship from the start of the 2016 or the 2017 season. The overall long-term interests of the championship will determine which candidate is selected."
It is not known why the FIA extended the deadline but F1i understands two potential candidates had made themselves known by the original deadline of June 30, which has since been extended twice.
The American Haas F1 team will become the tenth team to join the F1 grid in 2016 while a US-based investment group led by Tavo Hellmund has been linked with the purchase of Manor, but there have been no rumors of late of any outside parties who may be interested in joining Grand Prix racing with a new team.
