Red Bull RB20 chassis reportedly failed initial crash test

As Formula 1 teams enter the thick of their preparations, whispers have emerged suggesting that Red Bull's highly anticipated RB20 may have encountered a hurdle in its development.

An unsubstantiated report published by Motorsport.com’s Italian affiliate claims that Red Bull’s 2024 contender has failed its initial frontal crash test.

Formula 1's crash tests are designed to ensure that the cars can withstand the immense forces encountered during racing incidents. They are subjected to a series of rigorous simulations, including frontal impact and rear impact.

These tests aim to protect the driver and minimize the risk of injury in the event of a collision.

While the validity of these rumors remains to be seen, their potential implications cannot be overlooked. A failed crash test would undoubtedly pose a challenge for Red Bull as it calls into question the structural integrity of their new car.

However, it's crucial to acknowledge that such setbacks are not uncommon in the high-stakes world of Formula 1. Pushing the boundaries of innovation and pushing the limits of design are hallmarks of the sport, and teams often incur minor setbacks along the way.

Red Bull has neither confirmed nor denied the report. But Helmut Marko, speaking to F1 Insider, has suggested that if the team’s RB20 chassis has indeed failed its Front Impact Structure Dynamic test, this would equate to encouraging news.

"If we had passed the first crash test, that would be precisely the problem,” he said. “Then we wouldn't have done well!"

In other words, passing the test with flying colors would indicate that Red Bull isn’t stretching the limits of its design.

It’s also worth noting that Red Bull failed an early crash test two years as it prepared its RB18 – its first ground effects car – for the 2022 F1 season.

In another report from Motorsport Italia, it was claimed that Ferrari’s heavily revised 2024 design had successfully passed all of its homologation tests at the CSI centre in Bollate.

It’s alleged that the Scuderia’s 676 passed its first test before Christmas. The Italian outfit is scheduled to unveil its F1 contender at Fiorano on 13 February.
