F1’s return to Europe: A flurry of upgrades

Lotus

Motor Racing - Formula One Testing - Barcelona Test - Day Two - Barcelona, Spain

We expected to see a shorter nose at Lotus but it has been postponed until Canada (the new design failed the crash test). But the E23 was fitted with a new rear wing that featured a long vertical slot on both endplates.

This edge allows dirty high-pressure air coming off the rotating wheels to go through the endplate and towards a low-pressure zone without disrupting the brake ducts and diffuser.

This kind of opening tends to remain fairly narrow, as aerodynamicists do not want to see a massive amount of air circulating through the endplate and trouble the low-pressure area under the main board.

A couple of innovations also appeared during the post-Spanish Grand Prix test, including a revised “monkey seat” winglet and front wing.
