F1’s return to Europe: A flurry of upgrades

Williams

It was believed Williams had more innovations in the pipeline for its FW37, though some were less visible to the naked eye. Take the vertical vanes under the nose for instance. These are located in a key development area and their design has been subtly altered indeed.

However, the updated vertical fins on top of the sidepods are easier to spot. There used to be only one device, now there are three of them (see blue arrows). These are linked to a new winglet placed on each side of the cockpit area (see red arrows). This revamped design merges the two elements from the previous spec.

All these aero elements are aimed at bringing more energy to the boundary layer to make sure the airflow remains attached – or at least to delay the separation of the flow – when it circulates around the car’s sidepods and engine cover, which has a high inclination angle on the Williams.
