When McLaren goes below size zero

Already dubbed “the size zero Formula One car” – in accordance with Ron Dennis’ favoured design philosophy – the MP4-30’s sidepods were further trimmed down in order to accomodate the new mirrors. The car’s bodywork now wraps up more compactly around the mechanical parts as well as at the back.

As a result, a bulge has appeared at the rear of the engine cover (see yellow arrows), while wishbones spring out of revised openings (see white arrows). The rationale behind the new design is that a tighter package improves the car’s overall aerodynamics and helps generate more downforce and less drag.
