2015 F1 season: F1i’s teams review

Motor Racing - Formula One World Championship - Japanese Grand Prix - Race Day - Suzuka, Japan

Sauber - 5/10

After being in such a dire financial position towards the end of 2014 the fact Sauber even raced this year is perhaps an achievement in itself. With two new drivers and new sponsorship, Sauber produced a solid car which benefitted from a hugely improved Ferrari power unit from the start of the season.

Coming off the back of a scoreless 2014, Sauber was able to start the season strongly thanks to the new car being similar to its predecessor, allowing it to maximise its potential in the early rounds. The highlight was Felipe Nasr’s fifth place on debut as both cars scored points in two of the first three races, but the lack of success from an updated front wing in Bahrain set the team back.

Focusing on an aerodynamic update to be introduced in Singapore, Sauber was slipping back through the field due to its lack of development, although Marcus Ericsson put together a run of three consecutive races in the points in the middle of the season. The update delivered little at first and the team looked under threat from McLaren but another top-six finish for Nasr in Russia ensured Sauber had enough of a cushion to at least hold on to eighth in the constructors’ standings.
