Article 13.2 of the FIA’s technical regulations reads: “The steering wheel must be fitted with a quick release mechanism operated by pulling a concentric flange installed on the steering column behind the wheel.” Drivers and/or marshals can thus easily remove it in case of accident, while this also makes it easier for the engineers to set it up outside the car.
