Antonio Giovinazzi (P16): 5/10
From his Friday showing in practice it was always going to be a hard task for the Alfa Romeo driver to make it out of the first round of qualifying. But even so, for Antonio Giovinazzi to end up bottom of qualifying after clattering a kerb and in last place on the grid was still rather unexpected. While he soon dispatched Nicholas Latifi at the start it still took him half the afternoon to make any sort of forward progress from there in the race itself, and after his second pit stop he was back in last place. However to his credit Giovinazzi got his head down for his final stint on soft tyres and he made up a further three places before reaching the finishing line. It was a welcome silver lining, but there was no denying that it continues to be wrapped around a rather daunting black cloud as far as Alfa Romeo is concerned.
Kevin Magnussen (P15): 6/10
Like his Haas team mate, Kevin Magnussen was suffering vertigo after Friday's first practice which saw him in a very promising ninth place after the team had rebuilt his car in the week since Silverstone. Was this the fillip he needed to get back on competitive terms with his midfield rivals? Unfortunately that optimism quickly slipped away when he was back in the bottom five in the remaining sessions and in qualifying itself, leaving him starting the race from 16th place. He picked up a couple of places at the start, and running a one-stop race saw him climb as high as ninth place before he pitted on lap 37 to trade his spent softs for some more road-worthy mediums. That gave him enough speed to climb back to 13th place, but subsequent tyre wear meant he couldn't do much to avoid handing a couple of positions back in the closing laps to Esteban Ocon and Kimi Raikkonen.
