ENGINE OIL COOLERS LIKE NO OTHERS
Mercedes’ incredible run of success over the past three years has highlighted the cardinal importance of seamless power unit/chassis integration. Lodging a year-old Ferrari engine into the STR11 chassis necessarily called for compromises. The car was force instance too heavy at the start of the 2016 campaign and cooling was far from optimum.
As one can see on the images above, the characteristic engine oil coolers were carried over from the 2015-spec Toro Rosso. Instead of featuring in the sidepods, they are installed higher up, around the engine. These radiators use fresh air from the lateral airbox feeds (see yellow arrows). This unique design frees up some space in the sidepods, which are particularly undercut on the STR11.
