7 — Toro Rosso: The STR10 goes on a diet

Despite having a smaller budget than parent team Red Bull, Toro Rosso keeps bringing new developments to its car. Following the introduction of a low-downforce rear wing in Canada, the STR10 sported a slimmer engine cover in Austria (compare the two RENAULT logos above). The tighter rear bodywork no longer covers the pull rod (see yellow lines) that pulls the rocker, which in turn levers the damper and spring of the rear suspension.

The tighter rear improves the airflow circulation in the area, which is essential for the car’s aerodynamics. However, the slimmer package compromises cooling because less hot air can be vented through the rear openings. As often in F1, it’s all about finding the right compromise.
