The veterans were on their game at Monaco. For his one-off, Button had fun with the new car and it showed. You couldn’t tell he had ever been out of the cockpit in getting the McLaren into Q3, which was made useless by engine sanctions sending him to the tail end of the grid. Without them, he wouldn’t have lost patience behind Wehrlien and tried an overly optimistic move, or a penalty that made him chuckle considering his situation.
