Esteban Ocon (P14): 6/10
Esteban Ocon finished first practice up in the top ten, but that was as good as it got for the Frenchman. He sat out the wet afternoon session and never looked to have the pace on medium tyres to make it into the final round of qualifying on Saturday. He lost two positions at the start, and - after the early blitz of pit stops when everyone changed from inters to slicks - Ocon found himself bumping along in 16th place. While he made up a few places during the first half of the race these were due to Pierre Gasly's retirement and for a number of pit stops ahead of him; Ocon himself remained firmly stuck behind Kimi Raikkonen until Renault opted for a second mid-race pit stop in a bid to break the impasse. It didn't really work out, and for most of the rest of the race he was to be found circulating in a thoroughly undistinguished 13th - which he then lost on the final lap to Lando Norris in the Renault-powered McLaren, just to rub salt in the wound.
Lando Norris (P13): 6.5/10
After two thrilling outings in Austria, Lando Norris was back down to earth with a bump this week with the McLaren uncharacteristically floundering at the Hungaroring. After a reasonable showing in practice, Norris made it into the final round of qualifying but only managed to claim ninth place on the grid. That was still one better than his team mate but a long way short of the second row that the team had been becoming accustomed to. The race itself was even worse for Norris who suffered massive wheel spin on the wet side of the starting grid, which he bluntly described as "my first proper big mistake of the season". After that he was in disaster recovery mode for the rest of the day. The final laps might not have been as spectacular as those he managed in the previous two rounds, but he did get to pick off Esteban Ocon on the final lap even though it was too little, too late to get him anywhere close to the points - the first time he's missed out in 2020.
