Kevin Magnussen (P10, 1 pt): 8/10
Nothing about the build-up to the Hungarian Grand Prix suggested that Kevin Magnussen was about to pick up Haas' first championship point of the season. He was closer to making it out of Q1 then might have been expected, but nonetheless just fell short and was set to start from 16th place on the grid. He gave that up to dive into pit lane at the end of the formation lap to change from intermediate tyres to slicks, a stroke of genius that vaulted him up to third place albeit with a subsequent penalty after it was deemed that the team call before the start had amounted to illegal 'driver aids'. After that it was just a case of protecting as much of that early gain as possible, and he did extremely well to finish in the top ten while his team mate dropped out of the points on lap 34. Even though the penalty meant that he was demoted one place after the finish, it had definitely been well worth incurring given the outcome.
Carlos Sainz (P9, 2 pts): 7.5/10
After some impressive outings in Austria, McLaren as a whole really appeared to be struggling at the Hungaroring, and Carlos Sainz had a tough job to stay in the top ten in practice. He just about scraped through to the final round of qualifying but was irked to end up one place behind his team mate Lando Norris for the start of the race. Sunday got off to a good start with Sainz able to make up some early positions, but all that was all for naught when he collided with Williams' Nicholas Latifi during the hectic first round of pit stops. While he didn't sustain significant damage from the contact, it nonetheless cost him a bunch of positions. After that it was hard work for him to claw his way back into the top ten which he did with ten laps to go. He was rewarded with a bonus place thanks to Kevin Magnussen's post-race penalty, but it had still been a lot of top-shelf effort for somewhat bargain basement reward.
