Business mogul and Force India co-owner Vijay Mallya has apparently been arrested by Scotland Yard this morning on an extradition warrant.
Mallya, who fled to Britain in 2006, has been entangled in legal proceedings in India, his home country, with banks seeking to recover funds owed by his Kingfisher Airline.
Despite multiple injunctions, Mallya has failed to appear before investigators handling a probe under India Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
In September last year, Mallya had wanted to come to India but was incapacitated as his passport had been revoked.
Mallya has been declared a willful defaulter back home and India’s request for his extradition was recently certified by the UK.
However, according to lawyer HP Ranina, an arrest does not necessarily mean a stronger case for extradition.
