In the end, Nico was the best finishing German at Hockenheim. He had nothing for the Haas boys in qualifying. But when the lights went out, he was soon ahead of Grosjean. While he was never far behind Magnussen, he didn’t have enough oomph to make a move. While the Dane’s switch to intermediates didn’t work, the ‘Hulk’ stayed on slicks to give Renault its best result since Spa 2016, a result that consolidated the team's fourth place position in the Constructor’s chase.
