Believing the R.S.18 lacked Q3 pace, Renault decided not to have a go in Q2 because the eventual penalties to the trio of Austrian energy drinks backed cars would see Carlos start P11 and on the Pirellis of his choice. Shod on the softs, the Spaniard got a strong launch that was sadly ruined by a run in with a Williams, causing significant damage to the floor and one side of the car. From there it was a gradual drop down the order. He stayed out hoping to help Nico by slowing down his rivals, but it was for naught.
