Lance Stroll, Aston Martin (P14): 5.5/10
Lance Stroll was another driver who seemed to sink into the nighttime gloom in Singapore and was never seen again. He barely registered all weekend, with his highest position in practice being a desultory 14th in FP2. On Saturday he missed the first cut in qualifying which meant he started the race on a used set of hards from 17th, the sort of place from which it's difficult to make any sort of progress all evening. A couple of retirements and poor strategy from RB for Daniel Ricciardo meant Stroll finished three places to the good at the line, but for an Aston Martin to be tussling with Alpines and Saubers is not the sort of thing that a team dreaming of wins and titles with Adrian Newey can be happy with.
Esteban Ocon, Alpine (P13): 6.5/10
While the air seems to have gone out of Alpine again at the moment, at least it was a decent outing for Esteban Ocon who trashed his team mate Pierre Gasly across the weekend which is arguably top of every F1 driver's to-do list. Ocon just squeezed into the second round of qualifying at the expense of Daniel Ricciardo, but that was the best he could do, duly lining up in 15th place on the grid on Sunday. He made up two places at the start on the medium compound and completed 29 laps before coming in for a new set of hard tyres to see him out, but that wasn't a strategy that gave him much to work with. He spent the second half of the evening trailing behind Yuki Tsunoda, who presented him with no openings to get past.
