Carlos Sainz - Daniil Kvyat
Sainz was signed early to ward off interest from other teams, and it felt unfair to rule Kvyat out completely after the Russian started the 2016 campaign as a Red Bull driver and scored a podium in China. Despite Gasly's GP2 title, Kvyat did enough to get out of his summer slump and convince Red Bull not to replace him with the Frenchman for 2017.
