The further down the grid you get, the later decisions tend to be made on drivers as other influences take effect. However, Renault kickstarted the market with the somewhat surprising signing of Nico Hulkenberg from Force India for 2017. Renault's 2016 line-up did not have the chance to impress in a poor car, and the team was looking at other options but eventually retained Palmer alongside Hulkenberg after Magnussen turned down the offer of a new deal.
