Charade
The Charade circuit at Clermont-Ferrand hosted four editions of the French Grand Prix and was one of the most demanding circuits on the calendar. Over 8km long, the circuit wound its way round an extinct volcano which overlooks the city of Clermont-Ferrand, with few straights and a number of tight corners, and sharp stones made punctures a hazard.
Such was the nature of the circuit, drivers would wear open face helmets to try and deal with motion sickness as they twisted along the mountainside in first 1965 - won by Jim Clark - and then 1969-70. The final F1 world championship race on the circuit was held in 1972, when Helmut Marko was blinded in one eye by a stone flicked up by Emerson Fittipaldi's Lotus, ending the Austrian's racing career.
