The fact that Eric Boullier admits the team may not be fully competitive until the start of the European season in May says it all. McLaren endured a frustrating winter, with the new Honda power unit beset by reliability issues and the lack of mileage may mean a number of other problems have yet to be uncovered.

The MP4-30 is an impressive car in terms of layout, with a very compact rear end and new aerodynamic philosophy likely to make it quick once it runs properly. But running properly could be a long way off, and Australia is unlikely to see the car performing at anywhere near its full potential. Factor in Kevin Magnussen having to race in place of the injured Fernando Alonso after just 39 testing laps in the car and scoring points would be a very good achievement.
