WILLIAMS’ NEW FLOOR

The McLaren-Honda MP4-31, Renault R.S.16, and Williams FW38 all sported a revised and more sophisticated rear crash structure deflector.

The Williams tweak was part of the new floor brought by the British team to Budapest. Only Valtteri Bottas raced the update, which draws some clear inspiration from Mercedes.

New slots have been pierced into the floor, with the rationale of channelling the high-pressure air above it towards the area located between the tyre and diffuser.

The idea is to bring more energy to the air that flows along the diffuser, while also diverting the turbulent wake coming off the rotating wheels.
