George Russell (P16): 7/10
Oh dear. From hero to zero in 24 hours, George Russell was walking on air after putting in a stunning performance in qualifying that secured him 11th place on the grid, his best starting position so far in F1. It was a terrific effort in the worst possible conditions and gave him a real shot at winning that elusive first championship point. But it all went wrong just three laps into the race when he made an unforced error and ran off track, after which he was consigned to run at the back behind his team mate. "I completely messed it up," he said afterwards. As a result, his rating is pretty much the average of his polar opposite fortunes at the Red Bull Ring this week.
Pierre Gasly (P15): 7.5/10
Another driver to have wildly fluctuating fortunes this weekend was Pierre Gasly. The AlphaTauri was showing good pace right from the start of Friday practice, and Gasly beat his team mate in both sessions. When it came to wet qualifying, Gasly was impressive as he made it through to Q3 while Daniil Kvyat fell at the final hurdle. Unfortunately the race itself did not go to plan, the AT01 sustaining rear suspension damage in a first lap clash with Daniel Ricciardo that left him struggling right from the start. In response to his problems the team switched him to a two-stop strategy but that merely dumped him to the back of the field where it was all he could do to beat the two Williams drivers by the time the chequered flag came out.
