WILLIAMS ADDS A MONKEY SEAT
For the first time this season, Williams tested a monkey seat on its FW40 charger, which sported a more rounded design than last year’s solution. The Grove-based team also removed its characteristic T-wing setup when assessing the element on Saturday morning in Sochi.
Mounted above the exhaust tailpipe, the monkey seat helps the rear wing in order to avoid airflow separation. It ensures the wing operates in a stable manner despite a high angle of incidence, which is essential to generate aero load at high-downforce venues.
One will also note that Williams has yet to race the blown front wheel hubs despite trialing the concept in free practice for the Chinese Grand Prix.
This technical review is a selection of the evolutions introduced in Russia and does not aim to be an exhaustive list. One should also notice that Force India tweaked the bargeboards it had unleashed on the VJM10 in Bahrain, while Toro Rosso tested an engine cover with asymmetrical outlets on the STR12.
