UPDATED POWER UNIT
Introducing a second power unit (out of the four plants allocated per driver for the whole year) gave Mercedes the opportunity to modify its 1.6-litre V6 turbocharged unit in a bid to increase reliability. With the development tokens system now out of the way, engine manufacturers can bring as many upgrades as they want. It remains unclear yet whether the Mercedes updates also concern the weight of the engine developed in Brixworth.
Speaking of weight, the team has yet to confirm whether it has introduced a lighter gearbox. The current (or previous then) model has been considered too heavy and made ballast placement a challenge, resulting in tricky rear tyre management.
