TORO ROSSO TESTING THE LIMITS
A tiny vane has appeared under one of the wishbones of the Toro Rosso.
How can this element be legal, given the technical specifications that suspension elements must comply with in terms of symmetry and angle of incidence?
As noted by renowned F1 technical experts Craig Scarborough and Giorgio Piola, the small fin is actually located in a zone where vanes are allowed.
Indeed, Article 11.4 of the current technical regulations reads: “Air ducts around the front and rear brakes will be considered part of the braking system and shall not protrude beyond […] a vertical plane parallel to the inner face of the wheel rim and displaced from it by 120mm toward the car centre line.”
In other words, the winglet is considered as part of the brake duct (even if it is not attached to it), and not the suspension elements.
