Another chaotic weekend for Vandoorne. Friday was decent, Saturday not so much. His second slowest time, while Alonso made it to Q3 was a cruel reality check for the highly-rated Belgian. On Sunday, he was going well, getting the better of Palmer in the Renault, but he under-estimated the closing speed of Massa and shut the door on the Williams at turn one resulting in a justified three-place grid penalty for Monaco in addition to a DNF.
