MERCEDES’ POWER DOMINANCE
Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, the power-hungry Home of the Canadian Grand Prix, saw five Mercedes-engined cars feature in the top 10, both on the starting grid and at the chequered flag.
Having used the initial model of the Mercedes engine over the first six grand prix weekends of 2017, Williams and Force India secured in Montreal the upgrade that the works team had received at last month’s Spanish Grand Prix.
According to Force India COO Otmar Szafnauer, the benefits from the evolution lie more in being able to use the most efficient engine maps over a longer period than in a bigger power output on a single lap.
With 14 races remaining, Williams and Force India drivers have three complete and updated power units left in their engine allocations.
