In a car that was as close to un-drivable as it gets, he managed to keep it off the wall and joined Sirotkin in the all- Williams last row, 1.5s adrift of Vandoorne. While his car was not up to the job, and despite all the chaos around him, Lance drove a smart race, earning a decent result when taking circumstances into account. He pushed late to finish within the five-second window to Grosjean to pick up a position.
