F1i's Ultimate Driver Ratings for 2019

P13: Daniil Kvyat, Toro Rosso 7.02/10 (147.5 in total)
One of the things that surprised us about the full-season rankings was how far Daniil Kvyat ended up behind his two Toro Rosso team mates. After all, it was far from a poor year for the young Russian who was getting an unexpected second bite at the F1 apple after the Red Bull driver programme ran dry and left Helmut Marko in urgent need of a second driver for the junior team. However, poor weekends in Bahrain and China put him behind the curve early on and he was playing catch up for the rest of the season. The highlight as far as Kvyat was concerned was his fabulous podium in Germany, finishing in the top three for the first time since 2016 when he was with Red Bull. If there was a certain amount of luck involved in this wild-and-wet wacky race, it still justified an 8.0 in the post-race F1i ratings - although we actually thought he performed better in Spa after the summer break where he was a strong seventh with an 8.5 rating. The old 'torpedo' mindset certainly seemed a thing of the past, but for all his efforts Kvyat ended up rather overshadowed by the focus on his team mates Alexander Albon and Pierre Gasly.
