Was surprised to pick up a penalty for the collision with Palmer as he couldn’t see the Renault alongside him on the exit of Turn 2, but should have been aware he was still there after Palmer attacked on the entry of the first chicane. The car was heavily damaged and his retirement was punishment in itself, but he had to rejoin for a few laps later in the race to serve the 10-second time penalty he had been given by the FIA.
