Spa-Francorchamps - Aim and shoot at La Source
As much as safety has dramatically improved in F1 over the years, we all know that there's no such thing as zero risk in the sport. Starts are often tumultuous affairs, because of the congestion and the tendency for some to try and make their day in the first few hundred yards. But one overzealous driver's problem can be a bunch of snappers photo opp.
"Shooting a start is relatively straight-forward, but when something goes wrong, the difficult part is to keep on snapping because obviously you don't want to find yourself with your colleagues in harm's way," says Charniaux.
"That's fortunately a rare occurrence because our locations are usually well protected at most tracks.
"At Spa, all hell broke loose at La Source after Hulkenberg got too deep on the brakes, locked up, hit Alonso who then went over Leclerc. Basically, I'd already been shooting the field barreling down to la Source when the crash started, and then I kept shooting until the commotion came to an end.
"Personally, when I'm witnessing something like this, anxiety is building through my lens, and it's a big relief when everyone walks away unscathed and I can resume my normal routine. The pictures remain however."
