Monza - Fencing with the fences

There are no two ways about it: even with access to the racetrack, in many cases an F1 photographer must compose with the catch fencing.

"They have the ability to ruin your shots but as a professional photographer you learn to work - or sometimes walk - around them," explains Laurent.

"Tracks also have photographers' windows or gaps at marshal posts. And then sometimes, like in this shot before the first chicane at Monza, the fencing is just part of the décor, perhaps even its defining element as it divides the space between the track and the grandstands.

"But I also selected this shot for its nod to Monza's glorious past with the presence in the frame of part of the track's old banking, a remnant from a bygone era."
