F1i's Driver Ratings for the 2019 Australian GP

George Russell (GBR) Williams Racing FW42.

George Russell (P16): 5.5/10

George Russell was as compromised by the performance of the Williams FW42 as his team mate Robert Kubica, but within those constraints the rookie did rather better than his more experienced colleague. For one thing, he succeeded in the number one objective of any F1 driver: above all else, beat your team mate! He did this by driving a clean race, keeping out of trouble and doing what he could in the circumstances. Of course, he was two laps down at the finish - but that's still one better than Kubica managed. He was also still going when he crossed the line which is a achievement for any new driver in their first Grand Prix outing, let alone given the shaky state of Williams' pre-season preparations. These might be meagre crumbs for the reigning Formula 2 champion who is used to vying for race wins, but right now the team needs all the comfort food it can get to face the next few months ahead.
