Max Verstappen (P2, 18 pts): 10/10
For once, it wasn’t Renault’s fault but a sausage kerb (resulting in rear right suspension damage) that kept Max from moving out of Q2. A gearbox change sent him to row nine for the start. He picked up nine places on lap one and was fourth after lap nine! On a different tyre strategy than his rivals with the super-softs, he struggled to keep up with race leader Kimi Räikkönen, but had a great duel with Hamilton late in the going, which prevented the Mercedes man from clinching the title. From 18th to runner-up, Max was easily the driver of the day.
