While Bottas can also point to the strategy as one of the reasons for slipping back from third at the end of the first lap, he was also to blame for causing a collision with Hamilton at the start for which he was penalised. Bottas made a late attempt to go for a gap which was always closing at Turn 1 and slid in to Hamilton, damaging his own front wing. A drive through penalty may have been harsh but some form of penalty was right, and it dropped Bottas further down the order. Finishing one place behind his team-mate was a solid recovery.
